Is there a tax credit or rebate for balcony solar? (No, and here's why)

Last updated

No. As far as we can find, there is no federal tax credit, state rebate or bill credit for plug-in (balcony) solar kits bought today. Any savings come only from the power you make and use at home.

The federal tax credit has ended

The IRS says of the Residential Clean Energy Credit (often called the 25D credit): "The credit is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025."[source][source]

SGIP doesn't cover plug-in kits

California's Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) pays for battery storage, but "SGIP only covers permanently installed, grid-connected battery storage systems," and "portable generators, portable power stations, and mobile batteries don't qualify."[source] The CPUC's own page says customers must meet eligibility criteria set out in the SGIP Handbook.[source]

GoGreen Home financing needs an installed, interconnected system

GoGreen Home financing for solar asks contractors to provide a copy of the system's interconnection application with the utility.[source] Plug-in kits under SB 868 don't need an interconnection agreement, so they don't fit this program.

Exported power earns nothing

NRG Clean Power says "SB 868 creates no compensation mechanism" for power you send back to the grid.[source] This is not yet confirmed against the enacted text. Our calculator values exported power at $0.

And the fixed charge stays

Standard customers pay a fixed charge of about $24.15/month (CARE about $6, FERA about $12) that solar cannot remove.[source] A plug-in kit only reduces the per-kWh part of your bill.

What this means for you

Size a kit to what you use during the day, compare its price with the savings estimate for your utility, and check whether it's likely to qualify under SB 868. Not tax or financial advice; ask a tax professional about your situation.

No. The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after the end of 2025.

Not as far as we can tell. SGIP covers permanently installed, grid-connected battery storage; portable power stations and mobile batteries don't qualify.
